The new year has already been a good one for the Digital Metrology Standards Consortium’s (DMSC) membership efforts. This month, we welcome Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) into the family.

The organization’s mission is to “solve national security challenges through simultaneous excellence”. Their work encompasses all the Department of Energy’s missions: national security, science, energy, and environmental management.

The organization has a highly collaborative culture, which makes them a great fit for the DMSC development methodology. Our Quality Information Framework (QIF) standard is an important tool in their mission fulfillment.

We look forward to LANL staff participating in developmental DMSC Working Groups in 2023.

At some of our more recent DMSC General Membership meetings, it was brought to our attention that there is a need for better “Join DMSC” membership materials that will assist companies in navigating their Quality Information Framework (QIF) journey as members of DMSC.

We listened, and a new set of membership materials is being developed to help prospective DMSC members understand the benefits of joining DMSC. The new membership materials will include:

brief “Executive Summary” video

updated “Benefits of Joining DMSC” value proposition summary

updated “DMSC – Why, Who & What” PowerPoint, with a QIF technical focus for Engineers

This new DMSC membership promotional material trio is designed to introduce DMSC/QIF at the executive level, provide details about the benefits of joining DSMC and a myriad of technical points that will energize the engineering community about the expanded acceptance and implementation of the QIF standard by Quality organizations worldwide.

The expected release date for these new promotional materials is mid-April 2022, and will be available for download from the DMSC/QIF website for distribution to executives, engineers, and companies that may not be familiar with QIF and are beginning their MBD transformation.

Keeping our DMSC membership strong and growing is a priority that will keep QIF relevant now and in the future. DMSC membership, and all its benefits, is a viable way to streamline real-world QIF implementation.

For immediate information about membership, contact our Executive Director Mark Thomas by email: mark.thomas@qifstandards.org

DMSC BoD members are elected from the DMSC membership. At the end of this calendar year, two BoD members will be rotating off, and two will be elected for a three-year 2022-2024 term.

By DMSC Policy, the DMSC has the following constraints on the DMSC BoD:

The BoD shall maintain a minimum of:

Two Directors from within the Hardware/Software (H/S) Provider’s categories

Two Directors from within the User/General Interest/Consultants (U/GI/C) categories

The BoD shall consist of a maximum of six elected persons serving on the BoD.

Each elected director’s term shall be a service of three years. Note, by policy, the DMSC President is a voting member of the BoD and whose office is not subject to term limits.

Only one person from the same member company can serve on the DMSC BoD at any given time.

Nominees can only come from DMSC member companies of good standing, whereas “good standing” means that the nominee’s company has paid their DMSC membership dues prior to any nomination, the nominee’s company is an active participant in one or many DMSC working groups or committees in the past year or demonstrated their support of the DMSC or DMSC standards, and by any other previously announced criteria as deemed necessary by the BoD.

Existing BoD members can be nominated and elected for consecutive terms.

Only one vote is allowed per member company for each opening in the DMSC BoD.

Based on the constraints specified above, nominations are now open for two 2022-2024 BoD members from either category.

Nominations for this new 2022 openings must be submitted to Mark Thomas, DMSC Executive Director, mark.thomas@qifstandards.com by close of business (COB) December 6, 2021. Self-nominations are welcome.

On December 7, a list of nominees will be sent to the DMSC membership requesting return votes by CoB on December 31. Election announcements will be made on January 3, 2022.

Despite the pandemic causing plenty of business disruption throughout 2020, it was an exciting year for DMSC. Our ANSI QIF 3.0 standard was published as an ISO standard – ISO 23952:2020. However, a chaotic business climate last year did affect corporate support for DMSC with a slight dip in membership renewals, affecting mostly medium and smaller companies. DMSC is a non-profit corporation and 100% member funded, making membership retention key to keeping our mission on course and staying aligned with our member goals.

As we approach mid-year 2021, DMSC has experienced strong membership renewals so far, and we expect that this will continue throughout the year. According to DMSC President Curtis Brown, “currently, renewals are near optimum levels, and coupled with several new, large company member additions, funding for this year looks secure.”

Our current DMSC Working Groups have had high participation. We have expanded our interoperability with other standards by building relationships with complementary organizations such as PDES and MTConnect. Additionally, our recent “Coffee Chat” QIF Tech Series webinars have drawn over 100 registrants for each session. These QIF-centric webinars, presented by DMSC member companies and individuals, will continue throughout the end of the year with the intent of guiding our members along their QIF journey by providing real-life use cases and solutions.

DMSC is very appreciative of the companies that have already renewed their membership for 2021. We thank you in advance to those that will renew their membership support as we progress through the year. Your continued membership ensures that we can continue with our planned work to enhance and support the QIF standard.
