Reportedly, the 2024 International Manufacturing Technology Show (IMTS) attendance for 2024 approached pre-pandemic levels, with nearly 85,000 attendees. The six-day biennial event, recently held in Chicago, September 9 – 14, 2024, is the largest trade show in the Western hemisphere, and is a platform for showing new technologies for advanced manufacturing.

Curtis Brown, DMSC President, welcomed all to the gathering and gave everyone an informal ‘DMSC State of the Union”, which highlighted membership growth, current status of the MBC 1.0 standard and QIF 4.0 progress. The meeting also included a brief demo of the QIF Technical Training effort, and a rough timeline plan.

The 1-hour session on Tuesday, 9/10, drew 60+ DMSC members and potential members for cocktails, appetizers, and conversation.

Attendees will hear from Curtis Brown, DMSC President, in his “State of the DMSC” briefing as well as updates on current projects (MBC 1.0 and QIF 4.0). An introductory preview of the QIF Training/Certification effort will also be presented to those in attendance. This 30-minute informal DMSC in-person meeting is open to all DMSC members, potential members, and those interested in QIF.

A “focus group” session is being planned to solicit ideas and comments about our new QIF training program. The QIF Training Working Group has been tasked with preparing a 3 to 5-minute presentation of a prototype training video. The  DMSC “focus group” will review and critique the presented prototype ideas and concepts.

Other in-person meeting topics may be added, as an agenda is under development.

DMSC involvement included an exhibitor booth and a meeting room set up to accommodate members and other interested parties for an in-person General Membership meeting. Most of these monthly meetings are held virtually, so this was a unique event. The meeting was live-streamed for the benefit of those that could not attend in-person. A light buffet and beverages welcomed about 50 attendees to the meeting.

Keeping to an abbreviated agenda, the meeting opened with some remarks from DMSC President, Curtis Brown. Next, Executive Director Mark Thomas gave a report on the State of the DMSC, followed by DMSC Director/Treasurer Rosemary Astheimer presenting recognition awards to individuals who have made special effort over the past year, and offered DMSC appreciation to all our members.

Early in 2022, the DMSC hired Dr. Tom Kramer on a consulting basis to evaluate the current technical status of QIF 3.0, and determine what the next level of enhancement would be appropriate to keep QIF in a leadership position as a digital metrology standard. This initial effort was referred to as “Phase 1” of the Next Version QIF initiative. Over the last several months, Tom organized multiple public meetings designed to capture input from many sources, even those outside the DMSC community, about potential future enhancements for QIF.

On August 2, 2022 Tom held a public meeting to discuss his findings which identified a “laundry list” of items that could be changed/corrected/added to QIF 3.0, all with the objective of motivating the User community to further adopt QIF. Tom’s findings were extensive – his “Phase 1” report and conclusions are available for review on the DMSC SharePoint drive Meeting2022Aug2
