The Model-Based Characteristics Working Group launched June 2020 and conducts meetings on the 2nd and 4th Wednesday of the Month (11a-12p ET) for the purpose of developing a draft proposal for a new ANSI standard for Model-Based Characteristics: Nomenclature, Definitions, Symbols, and Practice. Additional meetings may be added as deliverables demand.

Chair: Mark Neilson, TechAzul
Co-Chair: Curtis Brown, Honeywell FM&T / DMSC President

We encourage participation in this WG by DMSC Members as there is still plenty of time for meaningful contribution before the final draft is submitted to the DMSC Quality Measurement Standards Committee. Once submitted to ANSI, review and approval can take many months before a new standard results (targeted for 2023).

Preparations are being made to follow the required procedures for submitting the proposed standard to ANSI sometime in the next 60 days (April-May 2023). DMSC has re-formed the DMSC Standards Committee to meet this objective.

The next step in the process is a final review and approval (vote) by the Standards Committee of the MBC proposal document.

MBC 1.0 will include model-based definition with persistent identification. It will compliment the Quality Information Framework (QIF) standard by adding engineering requirements to the model including nomenclature, definitions, symbols, data structures, and practices for product definition. QIF was created by The Digital Metrology Standards Consortium (DMSC). DMSC is responsible for the development, maintenance and support of the QIF standard, as well as the Dimensional Measuring Interface Standard (DMIS).

Ray Admire

The DMSC Standards Committee is chaired by Ray Admire and consists generally of DMSC members and/or members of the MBC Working Group. However, in the spirit of openness (and an ANSI requirement), the offer to join the Standards Committee is extended to any and all interested individuals and companies. DMSC membership is encouraged, but not required for participation.

So far, the following companies have expressed interest in participating in the DMSC Standards Committee:
Note: you must specifically request to participate

• Hexagon
• Mitutoyo America
• Johns Hopkins APL
• Lockheed Martin
• Honeywell
• Action Engineering
• Pratt & Whitney

The DMSC Standards Committee will fine-tune the documentation before submission to ANSI. The Standards Committee will either: formally vote on the final document, affirmatively, negatively, negatively with comment, or abstain. Since the proposed new standards document is coming directly from the MBC Working Group, it is expected that the fine-tuning process will be minimal and expedient.

If the proposed new Standard documentation is approved the DMSC Standards Committee, it will be submitted to ANSI for Public Review. The Public Review phase typically takes around 45 days. Should public comments be received, the Standards Committee will respond. With the resolution of public comments, if received, then ANSI will complete a final review. The final step in the process will be acceptance of the proposal as a new ANS (American National Standard).

The entire submission process should be completed in one or two Standards Committee meeting sessions. The DMSC Standards Committee will convene roughly within the next 60 days (April-May 2023). The Standards Committee work may be done through an in-person meeting, or may be a hybrid meeting – details are yet to be determined. To participate in the process, you must make a formal request to join the Standards Committee.

If you’re interested in participating in the DMSC Standards Committee proceedings, please contact DMSC Executive Director Mark Thomas soon for more details: mark.thomas@qifstandards.org

Curious about how to catalyze the digital thread with feedback loops made possible by MBD plus QIF to establish an interoperable and automatable Bill of Characteristics (BoC)?

At our June 28, 2022 QIF Tech Series Coffee Chat (1), Action Engineering CEO Jennifer Herron demonstrated how the Quality Information Framework Version (QIF) 3.0 defines the BoC as a list of all the characteristics applied to a product. If your team is working hard to create good GD&T as 3D annotations that robustly enable your producers the flexibility to fabricate your products while still maintaining your design requirements, that good data demands good interoperability. Model-Based Definition (MBD) is 3D CAD data that is digitally authored to be used automatically by manufacturing and quality engineers and planners to speed up fabrication and inspection in a highly accurate way. You must have the part built the right way while keeping costs low. That’s what GD&T was invented for. Now MBD leverages QIF to make that process digital; speeding up time to market and decreasing quality escapes.

Jennifer shared in an earlier Action Engineering news article how to maximize the QIF standard:

“Leveraging the modern QIF standard, the information in the annotations automatically populates the Bill of Characteristics, so all that data re-entry goes away. Then we take the semantic PMI, the associated geometry with its annotations, and . . . with a click of a button . . . program a CMM machine, or automatically do quality data analysis. For point-cloud data like CT scanning, we can overlay the CT scan data on our MBD model.” (2)

This is very cool technology, and no doubt saves time and money during production, but what about your people? Jennifer talked about that benefit too. These 3D data transformation techniques increase communication between typically siloed departments, such as Engineering and Quality. Studies show that companies and organizations that communicate effectively are 4.5 times more likely to retain the best employees. Who doesn’t want to implement innovative technology while attracting and retaining the best talent?

How does this benefit your business? You can expect:
• Increased product quality by eliminating human error due to manual data re-entry
• Increased use, re-use, and automation of 3D CAD data
• Increased product throughput during First Article Inspection activities
• Increased employee communications using digital twin techniques, thereby increasing employee retention.

If you have questions about the role QIF plays in the digital thread, contact DMSC Executive Director Mark Thomas, mark.thomas@qifstandards.org.

The Model-Based Characteristics Working Group launched June 2020 and conducts twice monthly meetings for the purpose of developing a draft proposal for a new ANSI standard for Model-Based Characteristics: Nomenclature, Definitions, Symbols, and Practice.

Once submitted to ANSI, review and approval can take many months before a new standard results (targeted for 2022).

The Characteristics Working Group’s intent is to complete a draft standard for submission to ANSI, a document that can be used as a new American National Standard (ANS) for the interpretation of features and design intent throughout the manufacturing supply chain.

The Characteristics Working Group, initiated in July 2020, is co-chaired by Curtis Brown (Honeywell) and Mark Neilson (TechAzul). The participants, mostly from DMSC member companies, are engaged as a joint effort by multiple corporate and academic entities representing various manufacturing industries.

The Characteristics Working Group meets (virtually) twice a month and is currently up to “Revision C” of a 47-page draft standards document.

The group meets on the second and fourth Wednesdays of the month at 11 am ET. Representatives from up to 20 global companies participate at any given meeting. Meeting details on this and other DMSC Working Groups can be found on the DMSC Events Calendar.

New participants (including non-DMSC members) are welcome to observe or participate.
