DMSC members have been invited to participate in a survey to rank items on the below task list for DMSC project activity. These are projects identified by the DMSC Strategy Committee. The charter of this committee is to determine a task list and priority for roughly 15 potential projects that ultimately would be useful to DMSC members and the metrology community.

DMSC Members received this survey invitation September 28, 2021; response is needed by October 31, 2021. We value the input of our members and results will be used to determine a “wish list” as we move forward with both volunteer and contracted projects.

Survey Closes October 31, 2021

If you are a DMSC member in good standing but cannot identify this survey in your email inbox, please contact DMSC Executive Director Mark Thomas.

The following 2 questions will be presented in our survey, asking you to rank order the items. The top item (1) is the most important to your organization.

DMSC Next QIF Revision Topic List

DMSC Activities: You will be asked to order the following items
(1 – highest priority, 8 – lowest priority) :

A) Align/Map QIF Results to PPAP (AIAG)/AS9102B (SAE)/ Y14.45 (ASME) (work already in progress): This work will result in a list of recommendations for using QIF data types in support of these standards. Includes excel files describing the mapping.

B) Align/Map QIF to SysML: (work already in progress): This is the creation of the QIF system data model using SysML.

C) Digital Calibration Certificate: This is an activity to investigate aligning with NCSL International on the certification data for digital calibration for metrology.

D) Metrology Equipment OEE (Operational Equipment Effectiveness): The activity is to investigate and maintain alignment with existing standards that already define OEE (e.g. MTConnect and UMATI).

E) Free to use QIF 3D MBD Viewer: This is a free-to-use standalone application that presents a view of the 3D geometry, features, characteristics, measurement results in-situ with the 3D navigable geometry. It should be presented through a browser.

F) Free to use QIF 3D MBD Viewer with Table: This is a free to use standalone application that presents the 3D geometry, features, characteristics, measurement results in a table format alongside the 3D navigable geometry. It should be presented through a browser.

G) Free to use QIF Tabular Viewer: This is a free-to-use standalone application that presents the features, characteristics, measurement results in a table format. It should be presented through a browser.

H) Pursue making QIF a LOTAR approved format: This is an activity to determine and execute the steps to making QIF a LOTAR approved format.

(1 – highest priority, 8 – lowest priority)

I) Add/Align/Map org/company standards to QIF schema: Every organization/company has its own customized standards. This is an activity to investigate if it is feasible to map custom standards at any single company to QIF schemas.

J) Align/Map QIF to fastening process data (welds, glue, bolts, etc.) methods: This is an activity to investigate if it is feasible to map industry standards for fastening processes to QIF schemas.

K) Align/Map QIF to gear metrology: This is an activity to investigate and align to existing gear standards (e.g Gear Data Exchange (GDE)).

L) Enable QIF security assurance using Blockchain Reference Model: This is an activity to align with the NIST blockchain reference model. This is to embed traceability provenance.

M) Enable QIF security assurance using NIST Digital Manufacturing Certificate (DMC): This is an activity to align with the NIST digital signature certificate (DSC) to embed digital signatures into standard data exchange files for the purposes of certification and traceability.

N) Model-Based Characteristics (work already in progress): This is a separate standard that will include recommendations for identifying nomenclature, definitions, and symbols for model-based product characteristics with persistent digital identification.

O) Non-contact Metrology (work already in progress): This is a list of recommended updates and modifications to QIF schema files to be considered by QIF Standards Committees (Resources, Plans, etc.) to include non-contact metrology functionality. This will also result in a procedures document.

P) Point cloud results: This is an activity to determine updates to QIF to store the as-measured results of a point cloud within the QIF instance file. This includes data storage considerations.

We created this survey to hear all about what’s important to you. As always, we’ll stay in touch and keep you posted on this and other news.
