Our purpose for attending the 35th Control Show for the DMSC was to:

• Promote the Quality Information Framework (QIF) standard at the largest quality inspection show with the most significant number of exhibitors in the quality inspection market.
• Build awareness that QIF is an ANSI and ISO standard for manufacturing quality digital data. Specifically in Europe, to promote QIF as an international standard.
• Spread awareness that the Digital Metrology Standards Consortium (DMSC) is the organization to turn to for quality industry awareness.

This year’s Control Show had over 760 exhibitors and ran from May 11-14, 2023. I spent three days at the show with a target list of organizations of current members and other organizations that might be interested in QIF and to learn if they were aware of QIF.

I met with all DMSC member organizations present at the show, and all were glad to see the DMSC expanding its presence outside North America by attending European events. Valuable insights and suggestions were gained from visiting with our various members attending the show. A unique aspect of our outreach at Control was meeting with member organization people who do not typically interact with the DMSC and had questions about QIF and the DMSC organization.

As for our targeted organizations, many of the accounts were aware of QIF, but not the DMSC. Several indicated that as more of their customers request it, they would implement QIF. I reminded them that many of the major companies in the quality inspection market already support QIF. Many of those companies are current members of the DMSC, and encouraged these organizations to consider QIF integration as they approach future product development plans.

In speaking with our existing members about what they need from the DMSC in a global marketplace, they were generous in providing helpful feedback. I met with organizations considering QIF as a standard they need to support for importing and exporting their metrology software products. I also found companies using QIF which we were not aware of … a delightful surprise. Finally, I spoke with many organizations about QIF and how the DMSC continues to advance this standard.

The DMSC felt our investment in attending this show was worthwhile and we achieved our objectives.  I look forward to answering any questions you may have about the DMSC, QIF, or the 2023 Control International Trade Fair.

The Coordinate Metrology Society Conference (CMSC) is the world’s premier event for Measurement Technology Professionals sponsored by the Coordinate Metrology Society. The annual conference will feature a full schedule of technical education topics, a guided AIRBUS aircraft factory tour, and exhibitors offering a wide range of metrology solutions and services.

DMSC’s Ray Admire will be presenting this relevant QIF-centric storyline as part of the Conference mission to bring pertinent technical content to their metrology-focused membership. The discussion will include Ray’s many years of quality engineering experience at Lockheed Martin to explain practical examples of how the aerospace company has used standardized data provided by vendors (and internal manufacturing centers) to improve product quality and reduce costs.

Ray’s presentation will be Wednesday, July 12th in the afternoon.

Mark Thomas, DMSC Executive Director, will also be at the show for the purpose of promoting QIF and DMSC membership. Ray Admire is currently serving as the DMSC Standards Committee Chair, and has been with DMSC since the beginning, in 2005.

Founded in 1984, the Coordinate Metrology Society (CMS) is a large membership of users, service providers, and OEM manufacturers of close tolerance, industrial coordinate measurement technology. These metrology systems include inspection software, traditional CMMs, theodolites, GPS, laser projection systems, laser trackers, laser radar, photogrammetry/ videogrammetry systems, scanning devices, and articulating arms.

DMSC will be represented at the 35th Annual Control International Trade Fair for Quality Assurance in Stuttgart, Germany, 9 – 12 May 2023. DMSC’s Marketing Director, Ray Stahl, will be in attendance at the show, evangelizing QIF (Quality Information Framework) adoption and recruiting for membership in Digital Metrology Standards Consortium.

Multiple DMSC member companies will be among the 760+ exhibitors and Ray will engage with them regarding the successful promotion of QIF.  Zeiss, Renishaw, Metrologic, High QA, Innovalia, OGP, Mitutoyo, and InnovMetrics are just some of the DMSC member companies exhibiting QIF solutions.

The 35th Control international trade fair for quality assurance has entered the 2023 home stretch. With just a few days to go, industry players will present their cutting-edge innovations in the fields of vision technology, image processing and sensor technology, as well as measuring and test technology, from the 9th through the 12th of May, 2023. Robert Brown received a BS in Physics from the University of Wisconsin – Milwaukee and an MBA from the Northern Illinois University. 25 years of experience in metrology and manufacturing specializing in MeasurLink application development for quality data acquisition, management, and analysis.

He serves as a chair of the Digital Metrology Standards Consortium (DMSC) Quality Information Framework (QIF) Statistics Working Group. Robert co-authored the book Information Modeling for Interoperable Dimensional Metrology. Current responsibilities include managing software research and systems development at Mitutoyo America Corporation.
