Squier DMSC, Inc. Metrology Memorial Scholarships for the 2024-2025 academic year. As UNCC is the only university in the Western hemisphere with a program dedicated to dimensional metrology, it has been a long-standing member of the DMSC and regularly contributed to its efforts to further metrology expertise in a variety of industries.

With the 2023 passing of DMSC founder, Bailey Squire, the DMSC funded an annual scholarship with UNCC as a way to assure Bailey’s accomplishments would be remembered far into the future. The DMSC/UNCC intent is to encourage students that have a committed interest in the field of metrology.

The recipient of the first scholarship, Samuel Parsons, was notified and has accepted the award. He is currently enrolled full-time at UNCC in the Mechanical Engineering program with a concentration in Precision Engineering & Metrology. A rising senior entering the Fall 2024 semester, he has a cumulative GPA of 3.03 and is from Fayetteville, NC.

Mark Walter, Director of UNCC Scholarship Office, remarked, “financial support of scholarships allows students to remain in college when they have no other financial alternatives, and recognizes students who excel academically.”

UNCC and its Engineering Department have promoted the DMSC scholarship and are preparing to review a batch of new applications to select the second award in the next few weeks.

A discussion at a past DMSC General Membership Meeting was enriched by the expertise of our DMSC board member, Sam Gambrell, on the topic of 2D QIF. The discussion indicated some confusion in the QIF community regarding the ability of QIF to support 2D drawings.

Sam Gambrell, Director, DMSC Board of Directors

Since this is an important use case, Sam led the discussion to clarify how QIF, from its conception, was designed to work with 2D drawings. Then, with the prevalent advent of 3D MBD model availability, QIF’s characteristic-centric, feature-based approach naturally and simply accommodated 3D MBD models.

To better socialize this critical knowledge, the DMSC Team is working on a new use case webinar for 2D QIF. Look for an announcement detailing dates and times for the webinar. As is our practice, the webinar will be recorded and made available for later viewing on our YouTube channel and a link will be added to our website in the Resource Center.

Capvidia provides True MBD (model-based definition). Model-based definition (MBD) is the practice of having the 3D CAD model become the authoritative information source for a product’s lifecycle. This is done by including semantic product manufacturing information (PMI) within the 3D CAD model that is both human and machine-readable. Innovators in digital manufacturing have seen double-digital productivity gains (up to 20%) with the adoption of model-based workflows. www.capvidia.com.

Starting in April 2021, the DMSC kicks off the QIF Tech Series. This will be a series of “Coffee Chat” webinars intended to inform and educate the Quality/Metrology community about Quality Information Framework (“QIF”) implementations and best practices.

End-users and Solution Providers (SP) are invited to present their perspectives on QIF topics in a relaxed, non-competitive webinar venue. Each “Coffee Chat” will be a 20-30 minute presentation, followed by 15 minutes for questions and answers.

End-Users are encouraged to share their experiences on the “QIF Journey” with real-world stories and insight as to the future of what is needed for QIF to continue its progress as a mainstream strategy.

Solution Providers can introduce themselves, discuss technical solutions and share how their offerings have become key components in the QIF implementations by End-Users. Sessions by the SPs are intended to be solution-focused, and will undoubtedly be an opportunity to acquaint the QIF community with what solutions are available and who can provide them.

The DMSC’s “Coffee Chat” sessions will be offered monthly (at a minimum) throughout the summer/fall.

Topics of interest:

• What is QIF: Where did it come from, and where is it heading?
• QIF End-User Implementation Success Story
• Model-Based Definition (MBD) & QIF topics
• GD&T topics & QIF
• How Metrology Standards Benefit Advanced Manufacturing Companies
• End Users and Solution Providers are encouraged to add other topics that may be of value

DMSC Member End-Users and Solution Providers are requested to submit QIF-centric topics they would like to discuss with the DMSC Quality/Metrology community. Several sessions have been scheduled for the upcoming months. We encourage you to develop your presentation concept and submit it soon for consideration; June is the next available slot on our schedule.

DMSC Members are invited to submit their presentation title & abstract to DMSC Executive Director Mark Thomas as soon as possible: mark.thomas@qifstandards.org
