While QIF 3.0 has been mainstream as an ANSI standard since 2018 and an ISO standard since 2020, the digital world continues to evolve. The DMSC understands that QIF needs to adapt to thrive in a world of multiple standards and disciplines.

Early in 2022, the DMSC hired Dr. Tom Kramer on a consulting basis to evaluate the current technical status of QIF 3.0, and determine what the next level of enhancement would be appropriate to keep QIF in a leadership position as a digital metrology standard. This initial effort was referred to as “Phase 1” of the Next Version QIF initiative. Over the last several months, Tom organized multiple public meetings designed to capture input from many sources, even those outside the DMSC community, about potential future enhancements for QIF.

On August 2, 2022 Tom held a public meeting to discuss his findings which identified a “laundry list” of items that could be changed/corrected/added to QIF 3.0, all with the objective of motivating the User community to further adopt QIF. Tom’s findings were extensive – his “Phase 1” report and conclusions are available for review on the DMSC SharePoint drive Meeting2022Aug2

Tom Kramer will also be joining us at IMTS 2022 in Chicago and is slated to present at our General Membership Meeting & Mixer. Join us in person Tuesday, September 13th 4-6pm at McCormick Place Meeting Room E353C. We will also broadcast live via our moderated GoToMeeting link:

Phase 1 is essentially a project to identify WHAT are the proposed changes to QIF 3.0, which of them should be made, and how shall those changes be designated (QIF 3.1 or QIF 4.0).

Over the last few weeks, as feedback from the regularly scheduled public meetings was collected, input (a vote) was requested from DMSC company representatives. Tom indicates that fewer than half of those invited to vote have cast a vote.

There are two questions for consideration:

1) requesting preference between having the Next QIF be version 3.1 or version 4.0.
2) was an investment style vote indicating company preferences for large areas of QIF development.

If your company DMSC rep has not expressed their opinion via their vote, please urge your DMSC rep to do so or pass the vote to someone else in the company by July 29, 2022 via email to Tom Kramer.

Input from non-DMSC members is valued and encouraged.

A final public web meeting on the Next QIF (Phase 1) is scheduled for 11:00 AM ET on Tuesday, August 2. Dr. Kramer plans to present the recommendations of his final report at that meeting.

Direct any additional questions to Tom Kramer or DMSC Executive Director, Mark Thomas.

Tom Kramer will lead the Digital Metrology Standards Consortium’s efforts to update the Quality Information Framework standard. We are currently in Phase 1.

Phase 1 of the project will identify what QIF issues/enhancements could be put into a “minor” QIF release, and what upgrades would have to wait for a “major” QIF release. From that analysis a determination would be made as to whether a minor (short term) or a major (longer term) release is practical for DMSC to undertake as Phase 2 of the project.

Tom will determine our meeting cadence August through November 2022.

QIF Project Manager Tom Kramer’s efforts to identify and categorize features, functions, and updates to QIF 3.0 continue. He has been conducting various meetings and leading conversations with a wide variety of QIF implementers. Through that process, Tom has identified 109 items/issues that will be considered as potential upgrades to QIF 3.0, yet to be designated as either QIF 3.1 or QIF 4.0.

Although Tom had expected to have completed his Phase 1 tasks by mid-July 2022, his conclusions will be delayed as he waits for more information from several key QIF content contributors. The delay will be minimal, but this information is key to producing a thorough and holistic analysis of all potential upgrades to QIF 3.0.

Phase 1 of the project is essentially summarizing potential upgrades to QIF 3.0, and determining which updates would be appropriate for a QIF 3.1 or QIF 4.0. Staying compatible with QIF 3.0 is the key criteria as to whether a path to QIF 3.1 or QIF 4.0 is chosen.

The DMSC Board of Directors is currently negotiating terms for Phase 2 of the project, which will involve the actual upgrades and updates to QIF.

Virtual Next Gen QIF meetings are being held online every two weeks, and interest from the QIF community is high. Check the DMSC events calendar for meeting details and links to join in the conversation. Reach out to DMSC Executive Director Mark Thomas with any additional questions: mark.thomas@qifstandards.org

This time change will accommodate the monthly QIF Coffee Chat webinar, which was already scheduled to start at 11am ET.
