Panel Discussion : Are STEP & QIF on a Trajectory to Redundancy?
Design, manufacture, and inspection processes share the need for a conflation of 3D Model-Based Definition and attributes related to both process and product. Each of these processes may have unique 3D MBD requirements but there is a great deal of commonality. As the digitalization of these processes have expanded and matured, interest in the 3D MBD and obtaining an import capability has proliferated. In order to facilitate this capability various standards based neutral files have materialized. This panel will discuss the continuing evolution of STEP and QIF, is scope creep resulting in overlap and duplication, can they be harmonized, or are they on a trajectory to redundancy where market forces rule their destiny.

Moderator: Ben Kassel | UMD ARLIS
Panelists: Sam Gambrell | Lockheed Martin
Melissa Harvey | Action Engineering
